* 1906 in Foxrock (IRL); studied French and English literature at Trinity College, Dublin; 1928 taught at the École Normale Supérieure, Paris (F); 1932 stopped teaching, worked in the Resistance from 1940; 1945 started a period of intense creativity, produced several novels; 1969 Nobel Prize for Literature; wrote a series of minimalist television plays in the 70s and 80s; from 1966 to 1985 he produced four TV plays with Süddeutscher Rundfunk that mirror the radical minimalism and intensity of the video art of that time; died in Paris in 1989.
