Studied history, classics, archaeology at universities in Cologne, London, Bochum; 1989 Ph.D. thesis on «Historicism deferred: The museological perception and discourse of antiquities in neo-classical Britain (and beyond),» published 1993; teaching and research experience in museology, cultural semiotics and media studies at the University of Leipzig, the Institute of Cultural Studies at Essen, the German Historical Institute in Rome, the Center of Literary Research in Berlin, the Cologne Academy of Media Arts. Guest professorships at the University of Kassel (Art / Aesthetics), Bauhaus-University Weimar (Media Culture), Ruhr-University Bochum (Film and TV Studies / New Media), University of Paderborn (Media Studies), Humboldt-University Berlin (Aesthetics and History of Media). Since April 2003 permanent position on the chair of Media Theories at the Seminar of Media Studies, Humboldt-University; lives and works in Berlin.
