Valie Export also uses the photo-collage medium to examine the ideological content of a famous art-historical model, in this case Michelangelo’s ‘Piet‡’ from St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. The exaggerated depiction of suffering and the idealized portrayal of woman as mother is confronted with the crude realism of a housewife’s everyday life, here symbolized by the washing machine (a variant on the same motif is Export’s ‘Strickmadonna’ with a knitting machine).
